When we arrived in St. Thomas last November, we met J and J from Manhattan, who were in town to start a new business, Happy Face Foods. The couple has extensive graphic design, marketing and branding experience between them and are committed to creating the next Ben and Jerry’s. And I think they just might pull it off.
Happy Face boasts all natural frozen desserts made fresh daily in the U.S. Virgin Islands. They currently offer gelato, ice cream, sorbet and frozen yogurt in delicious flavors like Carrot Cake, Oreo Cheesecake, and my new favorite, Tree Hugger (Chocolate with Trail Mix: almonds, peanuts, raisins and M&M’s). There’s also some new flavors I haven’t tried yet: Deep Sea Diver, which is Ocean Blue Vanilla Ice Cream w/ Gummy Sharks, Cinna’Mon consisting of Cinnamon Ice Cream with Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Dough, and Orange Cherry Lester, named after J’s dad. (Aw.. sweet.) They even have done Jagermeister-flavored sorbet. Currently they are running a contest to submit your idea for what the next new flavor of Happy Face should be. It can be a gelato or a sorbet, but it's got to be unusual but delicious. Hmmm.
Yesterday we went to Hull Bay Hideaway, for some live music but more importantly to support Happy Face Foods. Happy Face was there to give out free samples of their ice cream and other frozen deserts. Hull Bay now carries Happy Face on their menu.
We have been in awe of the speed in which Happy Face is growing on the island. Since our arrival, the frozen treats are available in most supermarkets on the island including Marina Market across from American Yacht Harbor and Gourmet Galley next to Yacht Haven Grand.
Here’s a scoop.. literally. The duo revealed that Happy Face plans to offer two exciting new flavors – “Hillary Clinton strawberry” and “Barack Obama strawberry". Happy Face will offer both flavors at their locations around the islands and tally scores to see which presidential flavor their customers prefer. They went on to say that the company did consider the more obvious tactic of using vanilla and chocolate flavored ice cream, but laughed and pointed out that strawberry outsells both flavors five to one. Now, that’s a entrepreneur for you. I’ll keep you posted when we hear or, more importantly, taste more on this subject.
A cute logo, a darling female spokesmodel, cleverly named flavors and – delicious deserts? You’re probably wondering, where do I sign up to invest in this phenom? The only catch? The obstacles in getting anything done on this island. But, if anyone can, they can. Happy Face, you can add one more order for a pint of “Hillary Clinton strawberry"!
